“Clayborne Carson, a history professor and director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University, said King's time in Connecticut played a role in his decision to become a minister and in influencing his views about segregation.”
As we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today, the Simsbury Free Library will unveil the new MLK in CT Memorial, with a socially-distanced, in-vehicle celebration. Dr. King spent two summers in Simsbury during his teenage years. Students of Simsbury High School created a documentary about Dr. King’s time in CT in 2009, and began designing the memorial in 2011, according the the memorial’s website.
The website states that the MLK in CT Memorial “is not just a monument but rather a place where people can sit, reflect, and learn about Dr. King. This memorial serves to educate people about the struggle that existed then, and continues to exist today, to obtain equal rights and how MLK dedicated his life to that cause. We want people to come to this memorial and realize the impact that they can have on the world.”
